Sensational. Daring. Global.

Chalk Road is a keen advocate of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), issued by the UN in 2015. Recently, we've set out to spread the words to all walks of life, from peers, teachers, children to adults.

Our Story

At Chalk Road Foundation, we are dedicated to making a positive impact in our community as we understand the detrimental problems undermining our home right now. Joining the various youths shaping the future, we're making SDGs activities an integral part of our project. From promoting education and gender equality to combating climate change and poverty, we are actively involved in various projects that align with the SDGs - one of which is sharing our stories and igniting the passion of young minds through our posts.

Sustainable Development Goals - What are they?

SDG: Nurturing a Sustainable Future

-🌎The 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDG), also known as the UN Global Goals, were created by the United Nations in 2015 with the hope of transforming our world and building a better future for the current and coming generations.

-🌎The SDGs were created because it was recognized that the world needed a unified approach to solve complex issues. Stemming from a conference in 2012, Rio de Janeiro, the SDGs include concerns such as poverty eradication, gender equality, climate action, sustainable consumption, and peace-building, and have expanded on a global scale since.

-🌎The significance of the SDGs cannot be overstated. These goals promote universal collaboration and facilitate natural connections. They also encourage political cooperation and promote collective action.

-🌎The incorporation of SDGs into education brings a lot of promise for progress. By exploring solutions that require a diverse range of perspectives, students are able to develop a stronger connection and understanding of real-world issues, thus practicing collaboration.

-🌎We are dedicated to promoting the SDGs visions, further spreading our core values. We believe that through integrating the SDGs into the educational curriculum, we can work together towards a brighter future for all.

SDG #4: Quality Education

-👨🏼‍🏫One of the goals of the 17 SDGs is Quality Education. This goal ensures inclusive and quality education for all and promotes the habit of lifelong learning.

-👨🏼‍🏫Education is among the top priorities in order to achieve global sustainability. A decent education is the foundation for future development and the well-being of all.

-👨🏼‍🏫However, in many developing countries, children’s access to quality education is limited. This is caused by downgraded facilities, out-of-date curriculum, and students’ declining interest in learning. In 2015, even with 91% of children enrolled in primary education worldwide, 57 million primary-aged children still remained out of school. Even in Vietnam, 2019, while the literacy rate is at 97.85%, more than 1.94 million people are still illiterate. These alarming statistics show how quality education, though improved in this day and age, is still scarce to some.

-👨🏼‍🏫Acknowledging the aforesaid issue, Chalk Road wants to do our part to contribute. In the near future, we will be holding online English classes at Dieu Luong Secondary School. We will also conduct surveys to gain insights into the students’ orientation, thus offering advice on their learning path. Step by step, Chalk Road will be able to bring about change.

SDG#5: Gender Equality

-👧🏼👦🏼Gender inequality is one of the most concerning problems in modern society.

Given the influence of the patriarchal ideology that women are obliged to stay at home, there are very few girls graduating from college in mountainous areas, not to mention women holding high positions in companies and the government.

-👧🏼👦🏼As a result, gender inequality can only be addressed when girls in particular and rural families in general have better access to education as a whole. Clearly, instilled in the minds of many, there are still certain gender stereotypes perpetuating gender inequality.

-👧🏼👦🏼Therefore, raising awareness to mountainous province students is more urgent than ever. Understanding the importance of education, the students will contribute to addressing gender inequality in the places they live. We, teachers and students in the cities, are lucky enough to have access to quality education. So, it is our responsibility to return the favor to our community.

-👧🏼👦🏼As such, Chalk Road hopes to pinpoint the importance of education and gender equality to the youth, especially girls in remote mountainous areas of Vietnam. Chalk Road will continue to work with schools across the country to spread the message of gender equality and raise awareness of education to more young people.

Sustainable Development Goals - What are they?

     SDG#6: Clean Water and Sanitation

-💧According to the UNICEF Children's Fund: "Clean water, basic sanitation, and good hygiene practices are essential for the survival and development of children in Vietnam.”

-💧Clean water is considered a mandatory requirement for a school. However, in reality, up to 20% of schools in Vietnam have inadequate or deteriorating water supply systems that are not being repaired. More alarmingly, in Vietnam, the problem of filthy, unusable, and poorly maintained toilets still exists in many schools, even in Hanoi. Dirty toilets without proper ventilation can lead to diseases such as diarrhea, skin infections, and typhoid. At the same time, students will be reluctant, unwilling to use the toilets, and "hold it" until they get home. Over a long period of time, this can cause numerous harmful effects on the body, such as the risk of bladder rupture and urinary tract infections.

-💧The Community Practitioners' and Health Visitors Association (CPHVA) has addressed this issue by launching a public campaign across the UK and Ireland, drawing the attention of parents and the local community to the efforts of local schools. As a result, a holistic solution to this conundrum has been found. If this act is practicable worldwide, why don't we join hands to make a change?

     SDG#13: Climate Action

-Focusing on "Action for Climate Change." and awaring of the urgency of climate change, the 13th goal highlights on immediate and decisive measures combating climate change and its impact.

-Firstly, climate change is defined as long-term changes in weather and temperature patterns, mainly due to an increase in emissions from human activities such as the combustion of fossil fuels, deforestation and the industrial process. The consequences of climate change include all-time high global temperatures, frequent inclement weather conditions, rising sea levels, and the disruption of global ecosystems.

-SDG13 aims to address climate change in a comprehensive way through reducing greenhouse gas emissions, adapting to climate change, seeking financial resources, and raising awareness in communities. SDG13 emphasizes that by means of international cooperation, we would be able to protect the planet, ensure welfare and maintain economic stability and equal rights for all.

-Individuals, communities, and governments all have a role to play in achieving SDG13. By taking meaningful actions against climate change, we can mitigate the worst consequences of climate changes, protect Earth’s ecosystem, promote economic stability, and ensure a better future for all. SDG13 is a reminder that our actions today will shape the world that we leave for future generations.
